Wasao is this quirky little gem from 2011 that showcases a unique slice of life in Japan. It’s about an Akita dog, Wasao, who rises to fame from an ugly-yet-cute perspective—definitely one of those films where the animal steals the show. The pacing is relaxed, in line with its small-town setting, and the humor feels very much grounded in everyday life. You get a vibe of community and warmth, contrasted with some of the struggles that characters face, especially Setsuko, who runs a grilled-squid shop. The performances are earnest, and it's kind of heartwarming to see how this former stray dog brings people together. Definitely an interesting watch for collectors of quirky narratives.
