When Knights Were Cold (1923) is quite the curiosity in the silent comedy realm. It features Stan as a Robin Hood figure who, oddly enough, rides around in this ridiculous half-horse costume, which definitely adds a whimsical layer to the whole chase. The vibe is light-hearted, but there's an underlying charm in its absurdity. The pacing, while somewhat erratic due to the lost first half, still manages to keep up a playful rhythm, and you can sense the influence of the era's slapstick comedy. It’s a unique mix of medieval nostalgia with a comedic twist, and though it’s not complete, what remains showcases some interesting practical effects that reflect the creativity of its time.
This film is particularly scarce, as only the latter half survives, which heightens interest among collectors of silent cinema. There aren’t numerous prints around, making it a treasure for those who appreciate the quirks of early film. It’s intriguing how the remnants reveal the creative spirit of the 1920s, and while it lacks a complete narrative, what exists is a delightful glimpse into the offbeat humor of the time.
