White Palms dives deep into the dark side of competitive sports, exploring the cycle of abuse that can persist across generations. The atmosphere is heavy, almost suffocating at times, as we follow Miklos, a gymnast haunted by his past. Szabolcs Hajdu’s direction is thoughtful, allowing the slow pacing to really emphasize the weight of the characters’ struggles and the intensity of their relationships. The performances are raw; you can feel the emotional scars of Miklos as he tries to break free but, paradoxically, ends up repeating the same patterns he once suffered under. The practical effects during gymnastic sequences are impressive, lending a sense of realism that contrasts sharply with the emotional turbulence, making this film stand out in its portrayal of ambition and trauma.
