White Squall is a solid Ridley Scott outing that dives into the world of sailing and the coming-of-age struggle. The film captures the tension of a group of prep school boys navigating more than just the ocean. The storm sequences are particularly well done, showcasing practical effects that hold up surprisingly well. The performances by the young cast, including a pre-fame Jeff Bridges as Capt. Sheldon, add a layer of authenticity to their journey. The pacing shifts from serene to chaotic, mirroring the boys' internal growth alongside the external tempest. It’s a little rough around the edges in parts, but it really immerses you in that 1960s maritime atmosphere, making it distinct from other adventure dramas of its time.
Released on DVD in 2000, then a Blu-ray in 2016.Filmed on location in the Caribbean, adding authentic nautical feel.Features a score by composer Marc Shaiman, which enhances the atmosphere.
