Winter Light is really something—Bergman delves deep into despair and faith. The stark scenery of Sweden adds this chilling atmosphere, and the pacing is deliberate, giving you time to soak in the tension. The performances are raw; Gunnar Björnstrand as the pastor is hauntingly detached, while Ingrid Thulin brings a desperate kind of love that’s palpable. There’s this constant wrestling with belief, or rather the absence of it, and it’s all so beautifully shot in black and white. The practical effects are minimal, but that’s never the point; it’s all about the internal struggles. It’s a film that asks big questions, leaving you in a contemplative fog long after the credits roll.
