Wise Girls is one of those early MGM talkies that captures the lightness of comedy in a somewhat chaotic family setting. Directed by E. Mason Hopper, it's centered around a retired businessman and his strong-willed daughter, who leaps into marriage without much thought, of course leading to all sorts of comical complications. The pacing has that delightful, almost frenetic energy that you find in many late silent films transitioning into sound. The performances, particularly from the leads, have a genuine charmāthere's a sincerity in their interactions that feels refreshingly honest. And while the practical effects are straightforward, they shine in their simplicity. You can really feel the atmosphere of the late 1920s seeping through, making it a quirky snapshot of its time.
