Woman Wise is this intriguing little film from 1928, directed by Albert Ray. Set against the backdrop of Jedda, Persia, it plays with the clash of cultures and personal biases, especially around gender roles. What’s striking here is George Gage, the American consul, who starts off as this staunch woman hater. Then there’s Billie Baxter, his new assistant, turning up and flipping his world upside down. The performances are quite engaging, especially how the actors navigate the comedic yet dramatic tensions. There’s a lovely atmosphere in the film, with pacing that allows for both the comedy and the character development to breathe. It’s not flashy but has a charm in its simplicity, which makes it worth a watch.
