So, 'Women in the Zoo' is an interesting little film from 2022, not much buzz about the director, but it's got a vibe. It's this intimate love story set against the backdrop of an arcade and candy store, which just feels delightfully nostalgic. Yamada's character is really something—19, dealing with deep-seated anxiety, and not doing much with her life. Then you have Notani, this exuberant traveler who just bursts into her world. It’s a study of opposites, really. The pacing is slow, almost languid at times, which gives you the space to breathe in their interactions. There’s something raw about the way they connect, and I think the performances really ground the film in a way that feels genuine. Practical effects are minimal, focusing more on character and atmosphere, which makes it distinctive in its quiet way.
Focus on character-driven storytellingGreat for those who appreciate slow-burn narrativesInteresting character contrasts
