Young Turkeys is a rather oddball slice of documentary filmmaking. It captures these three student filmmakers as they plunge into this hands-on journey of turkey acquisition and preparation, which is both amusing and slightly unsettling. The pacing feels almost spontaneous, reflecting their inexperience, yet there's a raw honesty to the whole process. This film really leans into the intimacy of the farm-to-table experience. Themes of life, death, and the reality of food production are present, but it's the filmmakers’ self-awareness that creates this curious tension. Their personalities shine through, sometimes overshadowing the turkey itself. There’s a certain charm in its rough edges, a reminder of the enthusiastic naivety of student projects. Definitely one to have a conversation over after watching.
