Yule Log (2023) has a pretty interesting premise. You’ve got these two friends trying to help their buddy cope with his wife’s passing, which is a relatable setup. But then they head to this isolated cabin, and things take a sharp turn. The atmosphere is thick with tension, especially as they discover the wood they’re burning comes from a tree linked to witchcraft. The pacing builds nicely, drawing you into the dread before unleashing the horror. The practical effects are commendable, grounding the supernatural elements in a gritty reality. Performances feel genuine, adding to the overall weight of the narrative. It’s not your typical horror flick; there’s something darker and more contemplative at play here, which I found refreshing in the genre.
