Zombie Isle (2014) is an interesting throwback to the late 70s horror vibe. It features a group of college students and their professor embarking on a seemingly innocent field trip to an uninhabited island, but things take a dark turn fast. The pacing is a bit uneven, but it builds a sense of dread and isolation effectively. Practical effects have that gritty charm that can be hit or miss, but here they add to the eerie atmosphere. Performances range from earnest to melodramatic, which somehow fits the indie aesthetic. What stands out is the way it captures that classic feel of survival horror, where the environment itself becomes a character in this grisly nightmare.
