Zoo is one of those films that captures the raw spirit of childhood against the backdrop of war. Set in Belfast during the harrowing German air raids of 1941, it's a mix of adventure and heartfelt moments. Young Tom and his band of misfit friends are on a mission to save a baby elephant named Buster, which adds this layer of innocence and urgency to the narrative. The atmosphere is thick with tension, but there are also lighter moments that balance it all out. The practical effects related to the animal scenes are charming, and the performances, especially from the young cast, bring a genuine emotional weight. Colin McIvor really manages to blend history and family themes without losing sight of that adventure feel.
