Lakai - Beware of the Flare is an interesting slice of skate culture, capturing the Lakai team’s first European skate trip. Shot over three weeks, it has this raw, unfiltered feel that’s refreshing. The vibe is loose, almost like you’re tagging along with the skaters, feeling that mix of excitement and tension as they tackle new spots. The pacing is chill, allowing for moments of camaraderie and the occasional mishap, which adds to its charm. The performances are very much true to life; you see these skaters at their best and in their lows, just being themselves. It’s distinct in how it avoids the over-polished aesthetic often seen in mainstream skate videos, focusing instead on authenticity and the thrill of discovery.
This film is fairly representative of early 2000s skate documentaries, but it holds a certain charm that collectors appreciate. It was released in limited formats, primarily on DVD, and copies can be somewhat elusive in good condition. The collector interest seems to fluctuate, but there’s definitely a niche group that values its candid portrayal of a pivotal moment for the Lakai brand and skateboarding culture in Europe.
