Once Upon a Time in China really captures this gritty late 19th century vibe. Tsui Hark’s direction is really something, blending those intense action sequences with a kind of dramatic weight that feels right for the era. Wong Fei-Hung, played by Jet Li, is portrayed with such depth; he’s not just a hero in a martial arts film, but a cultural figure standing against the tide of foreign intervention. The pacing has this nice ebb and flow - action scenes are punctuated by these quieter moments that dwell on the themes of nationalism and honor. The practical effects are commendable, too, especially the choreography. It’s this fascinating mix of history and legend, wrapped in a compelling narrative that makes it distinct in the genre.
Strong representation of Chinese nationalism.Excellent choreography and practical effects.Jet Li's performance as Wong Fei-Hung is noteworthy.
